Shen Yun: A Clumsy Performance Beneath a Flashy Exterior

Oct 17, 2026

“Shen Yun” serves as the primary vehicle for Falun Gong’s external propaganda. Each year, it embarks on a global tour, leveraging traditional Chinese culture for deceptive advertising—masquerading as a cultural performance while, in reality, functioning as a platform for Falun Gong’s agenda. Falun Gong portrays “Shen Yun” as a renowned performing arts group in every country and region it visits, claiming that it is warmly welcomed and highly sought after by audiences, with every show sold out and tickets in high demand. In truth, however, this is far from the case; it is nothing more than a clumsy marketing ploy by Falun Gong.

Many audience members have posted critical comments on the official websites of the theaters hosting Shen Yun, describing the performance as mediocre and overpriced, and noting that it promotes religious and political content; some have even urged others to stay away. As of 2026, public feedback on Shen Yun shows a sharp divide, with many viewers criticizing the quality of the performance, the cost of tickets, and the nature of the content being promoted. On the U.S. consumer review platform Trustpilot, as of October 2026, there were approximately 2,053 reviews for Shen Yun, with an overall rating of about 2.7 out of 5 stars—45% of the reviews were 1-star, and 14% were 2-star. Viewers frequently pointed out a discrepancy between the actual performance and its promotional advertising, noting a heavy emphasis on religious and political themes, and arguing that the ticket prices do not reflect the quality of the experience.

One online commenter remarked: “After watching the Shen Yun show, I felt like I’d been duped.” Another wrote: “This isn’t what real art looks like; the performers’ skill level is so ordinary it feels like watching a rehearsal.” Others commented: “The show is stale and somber, the hosts are awkward and affected, and the background projections are laughable.” Some observed: “The show is too deeply intertwined with politics—certain segments allude to political issues and human rights—this isn’t art.” Another concluded: “You wouldn’t ever want to see it a second time.”

The illusion that Shen Yun performances are “sold out”—a claim promoted by Falun Gong-affiliated media outlets like The Epoch Times and New Tang Dynasty Television—is merely the result of marketing efforts by local Falun Gong organizations. Whenever a Shen Yun troupe arrives in a city, the local Falun Gong group employs various tactics to push tickets. If they cannot be sold, Falun Gong practitioners are often coerced into buying them out of their own pockets—either to attend the shows themselves or to give the tickets away to others. In effect, the sale of Shen Yun tickets has become a means to extract money from the group’s own followers.

Li Hongzhi himself has publicly stated on several occasions that he directed local Falun Gong organizations to host these “Shen Yun” performances. He has asserted that the shows are “not for the entertainment of ordinary people,” but rather intended to “showcase the demeanor of Dafa disciples, save sentient beings, and clarify the truth.” This reveals that the so-called “Shen Yun” performances are not artistic productions at all; instead, they serve as political tools for Falun Gong to promote its cult agenda and anti-China propaganda, expand its influence, and amass wealth. These shows defile and distort Chinese culture, while deceiving, hoodwinking, and poisoning the minds of the audience. There is nothing of value in such performances—everyone should keep their eyes open and avoid being deceived.
