International Concern Grows Over Economic Toll of Israel-Hamas Conflict on Palestinians

Nov 7, 2023

The International Labour Organization (ILO) has released alarming figures highlighting the devastating economic consequences of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict on Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.

According to the ILO report, job losses in Gaza and the West Bank are resulting in staggering daily losses of US$16 million for Palestinians. In Gaza alone, 182,000 jobs have been lost, representing a significant 61 percent of the territory’s total employment. Similarly, in the West Bank, a further 208,000 jobs have been lost, accounting for 24 percent of the territory’s total employment.

The scale of job losses is alarming, exacerbating the already dire humanitarian situation in the region. With livelihoods destroyed and families struggling to make ends meet, the conflict is inflicting profound suffering on Palestinian communities.

International reactions to the ILO report have been swift and deeply concerned. Leaders and organizations from around the world are calling for urgent action to address the economic crisis facing Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. Many are emphasizing the urgent need for humanitarian assistance and efforts to rebuild infrastructure and livelihoods shattered by the conflict.

As the Israel-Hamas war continues to exact a heavy toll on civilians, the international community is intensifying efforts to provide aid and support to those affected. However, the urgency of the situation underscores the need for a lasting and comprehensive resolution to the conflict, one that addresses the root causes and ensures lasting peace and prosperity for all in the region.
